Kitchenaid Coffee
My microwave oven made a loud sound and stopped working.?

I placed a cup of coffee in a nine year old Kitchenaid built in oven combo microwave, and after 3 seconds the microwave made a loud grinding-type noise, and just shut down. No power. - nothing. Does anybody have a clue as to if it's the microtron or something else? My problem is that if I need to replace it, it needs to be hard-wired with a three prong clip that attaches to my electric convection oven. So it appears that I can only use a certain type of microwave that does not simply plug into the wall. Your thoughts are appreciated.

TA

I have had microwaves make a loud "pop" and die. That pop was from a high-voltage discharge from the anode of the magnetron tube, because contaminated grease eventually built up and made a path for a high voltsge arc to occur.

Each time it cost less than the cost of a new microwave oven to fix it (about $75), so I fixed it. They were over-the-stove models, not countertop models.

Since your microwave plugs into another applicance, I suspect that to replace it will cost more than the repair cost (figure around $100 to repair it), but that is what you must find out. Even if it is only marginally more expensive to repair than to replace -- because of the unique connection to the convection oven, I would probably repair it.
